I cannot even count the number of times I have been asked this question. And it is a question that has been debated by so many rescues, breeders, shelters, and anyone else out there with an opinion. The subject has been debated over websites, chat rooms and forums. I think the pros and cons of wolf dog ownership are equally divided.
In my opinion, wolf dogs do NOT make good pets. They CAN make great companions and friends. But that is true of any breed of dog out there. If you live in a tiny apartment in a busy city, adopting a husky or border collie would certainly be a poor choice. If you are a marathon runner, owning a pug or a French bulldog would be frustrating for both of you.
There are thousands of wolf dogs in rescue right now; there are also thousands of other breeds in rescue as well. No matter what breed of dog you are looking to buy or adopt, PLEASE do your homework first. Research the breed you are interested in. Check with other owners; make sure they have owned the breed for years and know what they are talking about. DON’T take the word of the breeder; most of them are more interested in the contents of your wallet. For a reputable breeder, check with your local kennel club or the parent club of the breed of your choice. Talk to trainers and veterinarians. Some vets will not even treat a wolf dog.
As for wolf dogs, yes, there are lots of breeders out there. Very few are reputable. Most consist of someone with a husky or malamute that wants to make a quick buck from unsuspecting buyers. After all, if you decide to buy a wolf dog, do you know what the cross is? How high is the content? How much wolf, if any, is actually in this animal? Our rescue does not condone breeding wolves with dogs for any reason. What is the purpose? There are many, many wolf-like wonderful dogs out there whose physical appearance, attitude, and personality are very predictable due to a careful breeding program by a reputable breeder.
If you simply must own a wolf dog, check with rescues first. There really are thousands out there. Most of them are in rescue just because starry-eyed people bought cute, fuzzy puppies without doing their homework. Then when the puppy becomes a gangly, destructive teenager, they get dumped at the local shelter or rescue. Did you know that most shelters cannot adopt out wolf dogs due to the liability? Sadly, many are euthanized due to local laws and regulations that make it illegal to own a wolf dog.
